Positive News for Social Housing Tenants

Social housing is vital in providing secure and affordable homes for many. However, a surge in social housing disrepair cases, has seen tenants’ physical and mental health negatively impacted.

Data from Inside Housing shows that across England, legal costs have doubled for local authorities from 2017-18 to 2020-21. Meanwhile, the number of council housing disrepair cases have risen by 132%.

However, companies such as Wates, are giving hope to to social housing tenants. Wates is launching initiatives specifically designed to tackle the growing demand of housing disrepair issues in social housing.

The “Healthy Homes” service aims to tackle issues such as damp and mould, in an effort to create healthier living conditions for social housing tenants.

Wates’ Healthy Homes Initiative

Wates’ Healthy Homes service is designed to target two of the largest challenges faced by social housing tenants: disrepair and damp and mould. The initiative works off a data-driven approach to identify which properties are most in need of attention.

According to the specificationonline.co.uk article, Wates will use a combination of its direct labor force and specialist contractors to deliver the service. The service will target issues like disrepair of fixtures and fittings, leaks, and problems with windows and doors.

In addition to addressing these immediate concerns, Wates’ Healthy Homes utilises innovative technologies to improve ventilation and insulation in social housing properties to reduce the future risk of returning damp and mould issues.

Creating a Safe and Healthy Home Shouldn’t Be a Challenge

While initiatives like “Healthy Homes” are a welcome step forward, unfortunately, disrepair and damp issues are still present in many social housing properties. If you’re a social housing tenant facing these challenges, it’s important to remember that you have rights and don’t have to suffer in silence.
