473,000 Workers Suffering from Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders

From 2022 to 2023, nearly two million British workers reported suffering from work-related ill health. Prior to the pandemic, the rate of self-reported work-related ill-health remained steady. However, last year’s rate showed a rise, with 1.8 million workers reporting suffering from work related ill health.

According to HSE data of the 1.8 cases of work-related ill health, 473,000 are attributable to workers suffering from new or long term work-related musculoskeletal disorders. 132,000 of all cases are new as of 2022/2023. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders have amounted to 6.6 million lost working days in Britain over 2022/2023.

What is Considered a Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorder?

Musculoskeletal disorders are injuries or disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage, and spinal discs. For the condition to be considered work-related the work environment and the performance of work must contribute to the condition and/or the condition is worsened or persists longer due to work conditions.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the Department of Labor defines the disorder as a musculoskeletal system and connective tissue diseases and disorders. This is where the event or exposure results in bodily reaction (e.g., bending, climbing, crawling, reaching, twisting), overexertion, or repetitive motion. Musculoskeletal disorders do not include disorders caused by slips, trips, falls, or similar incidents. Examples include:

What Industries are Prone to Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders?

Although no industries are exempt from musculoskeletal disorders, some industries are more prone to these work-related injuries.

The top three most affected industries are:

  • admin and support service activities
  • construction industries
  • human health/social work

In 1997 the Centres of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) released a review of evidence work related musculoskeletal disorders. CDC provided for the following examples of work conditions that may lead to the disorder. This includes:

  • Routine lifting of heavy objects
  • Daily exposure to whole body vibration
  • Routine overhead work
  • Work with neck and chronic flexion position
  • Performing repetitive forceful tasks

The report evidenced the relationships between these work conditions and musculoskeletal disorder of the neck, shoulder, elbow, hand, and wrist, and back.
