Recall of 1,500 Patients by Spire Healthcare

1,5000 Patients Recalled by Spire Healthcare
The recall of 1500 patients in February 2023 by Spire Healthcare, who had been treated by the convicted breast surgeon, Ian Paterson, will bring back painful memories for his victims and their family members.
2-Year Enquiry into Spire Healthcare Case
AWH first reported on the treatment provided by Mr Paterson in 2020 and then highlighted the case of another surgeon from Spire Healthcare in a further article. The article followed the publishing of a report by the government after a 2-year enquiry. The enquiry was set up to look at the circumstances allowing him to act without impunity for so long. Additionally, the enquiry considers what changes could be made to the healthcare system to prevent anything like this from ever happening again.
Unnecessary and Inappropriate Procedures
Ian Paterson used to be one of the most well-renowned breast surgeons in the country. He had a busy NHS practice in the Midlands, whilst also running private clinics at Spire Healthcare. From 1993 until he was suspended in 2011, he treated thousands of patients. During this time he was carrying out unnecessary and inappropriate surgical procedures on patients. Some of these patients could have been treated with a simple course of antibiotics.
In some cases, he advised patients to undergo double mastectomies upon discovery of benign breast lumps, and in other cases, he performed unregulated breast surgery leaving behind the breast tissue and therefore exposing patients to the risk of their cancer returning.

Sentencing of 20 Years Imprisonment
He was convicted by a court in 2017 of 17 counts of wounding with intent. Additionally, he was found guilty of three counts of wounding charges. He was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison. However, the sentence was later deemed to be unduly lenient and was later increased to 20 years.
Despite Spire Healthcare commissioning its own independent review, and contributing £37 million to the compensation fund, they have only recently recalled 1500 patients which had been identified following analysis of their legacy IT systems. This comes after a sweep of Spire Healthcare’s IT systems, revealed new cases. These discoveries come after two previous recalls had been made by Spire.
The recall is for patients between 1993 and the early 2000s specifically. Therefore, there will be some patients who have been previously denied on the earlier recalls due to Spire Healthcare not having the paperwork. Therefore, if you had a previous claim rejected but have now been given a new recall, please get in touch.
