Spinal Injury

What is a spinal cord injury?

A spinal cord injury is defined as anything that causes damage to any part of the spinal cord or the nerves at the end of the spinal canal (known as the cauda equina). Spinal injuries are defined into two different categories. These are:

Complete

This is when all sensory feeling and all ability to control movement – also known as motor function – is lost below the area in which the injury has occurred. This means that the injury is referred to as complete.

Incomplete

If there is some level of feeling and ability to control movement below where the injury has happened, then this is referred to as an incomplete injury.

Paralysis can also be categorised as:

Tetralegia

This can also be referred to as quadriplegia, and means that your arms, hands, trunk, legs and pelvic organs are all affected by the injury.

Paralegia

This paralysis affects all or part of the trunk, legs and pelvic organs.

Spinal cord injuries can include a number of different symptoms. These can be:

  • Loss of movement
  • Altered or lost sensation below the injury, including the ability to sense hot and cold sensations.
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Difficulty breathing, coughing or clearing secretions from your lungs
  • Pain in the nerve fibres in your spinal cord
  • Spasms

What can result in a spinal injury?

There are a number of ways in which a spinal injury may occur. Some common causes of spinal cord injury include:

If you have suffered a spinal injury for any of these reasons, then we can help you to get the compensation that you need for your recovery. Spinal injury patients often need modification and adaptation for their homes, and compensation can help you to achieve all of the changes that you will need to move forward in your life.

In 2018, reports were published by the Health Service Journal that showed that many spinal injury patients had been trapped in limbo because of disputes between commissioners and providers over who would be providing the specialist equipment that they needed before they returned home. Having the financial support of compensation can give you the independence you need to get on with your life on your own terms.
