What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a type of neck injury caused by a sudden fast jolt forwards or backwards, and is common when cars collide on the road. This jolt causes the tendons or ligaments in the neck to sprain.

Because it is a form of soft tissue injury, the pain can become increasingly worse and even constant over time. In serious cases, whiplash can lead to fractures or even spinal injuries.

The symptoms of whiplash tend to only become obvious around six to twelve hours after the incident has occurred, and sometimes it can take days before the pain reaches its most severe.

Headaches, dizziness, memory loss and muscle spasms are all common symptoms of whiplash. Difficulty sleeping is also common. When coupled with constant discomfort, this can easily leave sufferers with other problems, like depression and stress.

When the symptoms last for six months or longer your condition would be classed as chronic whiplash or late whiplash syndrome. This understandably causes extreme pain and inconvenience.
